First conceived in 1992, Hirst's Spin Paintings were a reaction to the individualistic philosophy of Abstract Expressionism. In contrast to the expression of subjective emotion and the primacy of the artist's inner self, Hirst was looking to devise a machine to make art, based on his idea that it was possible to create ‘a clinical system’ to produce ‘art without angst’. Instead of painting with a brush, Hirst began pouring paint onto his canvases as they spun on a machine, allowing the centrifugal force to create chance movements and colour interactions. This explosive and dazzling technique is demonstrated to brilliant effect in this unique work on paper.
