Hockney designed the 39 etchings that illustrate six revisited Grimm fairy tales - The Little Sea Hare, Fundevogel, Rapunzel, The Boy Who Left Home to Learn Fear, Old Rinkrank, and Rumpelstilzchen - between May and November 1969. Drawn directly onto copper plates, they give life to these traditional stories in a style which is profoundly his own, seamlessly blending farcical and grotesque, comedic and earnest, profane and art-historical references.
