Lowry's paintings and prints depicting football matches are among his most popular works. In October 2022 his painting "Going to the Match" set a new auction record for the artist, selling for £7.2 million at Christie's in London. The Professional Footballers' Association called it "quite simply the finest football painting ever". Lowry was a lifelong follower of the game, supporting Manchester City but nursing a soft spot for local rival Bolton Wanderers.

This print is an exceptional example of Lowry's love for the game and his keen eye for capturing the details of Mancunian life. It's also very special in that it shows the game in full flow; most of the artist's football scenes depict crowds walking to the match from outside the stadium.
