Grease crayon, lithographic tusche, lead pencil and charcoal were combined to create a rich and lifelike impression. The playful drawings depicted in the portfolio capture Picasso in a spirit of happiness and supreme artistic confidence. The portrait was published in an edition of 666 each in French, German and English.
From around 1964, the artist returned again and again to the male portrait. Invariably clad in a blue and white fisherman's shirt, they vary in character from virile young men to grizzled figures who resembled Picasso in his old age. Very often they are depicted with a cigarette, a habit that the artist was persuaded to give up on health grounds in 1965. These artworks can be seen as his means of re-imagining his conceptions of himself at various points in his life, and a wistful farewell to his youth.
