Soulages was among the international artists invited to contribute a work to the project, which brought contemporary art into dialogue with the global sporting event.
Soulages explored light throughout his career, frequently working with black, sepia and deep blue. In his prints and works on paper, he thinned, interrupted or removed areas of dark pigment to expose the white sheet beneath, making the paper itself appear to emit light. In his later Outrenoir paintings, he reversed this relationship, covering entire canvases in black and working their surfaces so that ridges, grooves and changes in texture caught and reflected the surrounding light.
