Described by the artist as 'a mixture of time, water and stone', mud has acted as both inspiration and medium for Richard Long throughout his career.  The mud of the River Avon, in his hometown of Bristol, has proved particularly important to Long's body of work: ‘I grew up playing along the riverbanks, so the River Avon is a big influence, the huge tide and the mud banks'.
