Dali and The Story of Aurélia
The Aurelia etchings were inspired by a novella of the same name by the 19th century French author and poet Gerard de Nerval. An interesting character with a pet lobster and distaste for the material world, Nerval was a great source of inspiration for the Surrealists. 'Aurélia' was his final work. It's a harrowing account of his descent into madness, provoked in part by his infatuation with an actress named Jenny Colon. This proto-surrealist text could've been tailor-made for Dali's imagery.
