When Man Ray moved to Hollywood in 1940, he had been forced to leave most of his works behind in Paris. He needed to show his art to new audiences in the United States, and he therefore made new versions of some of his former objects, often based on photographs. He gave this collection the name Objects of My Affection. In 1944, he compiled an album with this title, containing a selection of photographs featuring objects, paintings and interiors. To accompany each picture he wrote a quirky and often ambiguous commentary.
This extremely rare design for an exhibition brochure at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York bears a similar list of ten Objects on the reverse. The front cover is based on an image by Marcel Duchamp.
The Julien Levy Gallery specialised in Surrealist art, photography, and experimental film. Besides Man Ray, artists such as Arshille Gorky, Joseph Cornell, Frida Kahlo, Rene Magrette, Max Ernst, Dorothea Tanning and Alberto Giacometti all enjoyed solo exhibitions there before the gallery closed in 1949.
