Stik
STIK is an anonymous British graffiti artist based in East London. His iconic stick-figures rendered in black lines and block colours began to appear on the city's streets in the early 2000s and have become much-loved fixtures in the local landscape. The artist's commitment to social justice and his determination to create art for the People have struck a chord with audiences the world over and his images can be found in cities and galleries throughout several continents. He is without question one of the most popular artists working today.
Little is known about STIK's early life. Intensely private and guarded about his upbringing, he has only described his lack of formal artistic training and his experience of homelessness in his early twenties. While living in homeless shelters he began to paint in the streets of Hackney, refining his techniques and absorbing the influence of his contemporaries. He found firm support from his friends in the local community, and with their assistance was able to secure independent housing. Now able to devote his full energies to his evolution as an artist, he embraced street art as a way of expressing his gratitude to the people who had helped him, and each of his works is created first and foremost for the public.
