Commissioned in 1937 by the ‘Musée du Petit Palais’, Paris and issued as a poster for the important exhibition ‘Les Maîtres de l'art indépendant, 1895-1937’.
Why is this rare?
Very few examples survive in this fine condition.
This lithograph marks the first collaboration between Matisse and Fernand Mourlot. The composition is derived from the oil painting ‘Le Rêve.' painted by Matisse in 1935. The exhibition ‘Les Maîtres de l'art indépendant’ was an important statement on French art just before the Second World War.
