During his later years, Lowry became increasingly interested in trying to explore the complex web of interactions and relationships present in small groups of people. His approach to his subjects became less formal, but also cooler and more critical, and he would often poke fun at the figures within his images.
In this piece, a family steps out for a walk in lock-step behind the steely-eyed matriarch. The father boasts a tiny head and exaggeratedly baggy clothes, and a child in a brilliant red hat grins at the viewer from the centre of the composition. The complicated psychological reality of this family reflects Lowry's own complex personality. "Had I not been lonely" he once said, "none of my work would have happened. I should not have … seen the way I saw things."
Through images like The Family, Lowry was able to explore the aspects of human relationships that he found so fascinating yet so difficult to understand.
