Hodgkin's etchings boast a fabulous variety of surface textures and colour effects. For this reason, they were extremely time-consuming to produce. The technical demands of the artist's 1994-95 cycle of Venice etchings had been so complex that Hodgkin swore the series would be his last.
However, at the turn of the Millennium he returned to the 107 Workshop in Wiltshire, where he had been creating prints with Jack Shirreff since 1986. Throughout the following year Hodgkin created nine intimate and exquisite etchings that became known as the Small Prints.
It was produced from a sugar lift-ground etching and aquatint from two copper plates, with carborundum from one aluminium plate, printed in ultramarine blue, ocean blue and cobalt blue, with hand colouring in red, zinc white and burnt Sienna acrylic.
