Food plays a large role in Caulfield's art and many of his most important paintings depict the interiors of restaurants. He told the critic Marco Livingstone that ‘one reason I choose restaurant interiors is that they give one more scope to introduce space and objects than in a normal domestic setting.’ A glamourous showroom for mundane objects, they spoke to the aesthetic concerns that would come to dominate his art. Throughout the years Caulfield and his contemporaries would often eat for free in some of London's finest restaurants by exchanging his artworks for credit.

Although his style was forged during the glory days of the Pop movement, Caulfield's work owed more to the canon of European Modernism than the dazzling commercial culture that inspired so many of his contemporaries. Caulfield had relied upon the silkscreen process to produce his prints since being introduced to the technique in 1964. Its flatness, density and saturation of colour was a perfect foil for the deceptive simplicity of his images. Many of his screenprints were produced with Chris Prater at Kelpra Studio, one of the most important print workshops to emerge in Britain after the War.
