Triptych 1986
Francis Bacon
Image: 65.2 x 48.6 cms
The central panel is a portrait of John Edwards, the artist’s long-term lover and muse.
The right-hand panel is based on a photograph of Trotsky’s study in Mexico, taken after his murder. Bacon depicts the desk belonging to the assassinated Russian political figure Leon Trotsky. Murdered with an ice pick in Mexico by a Spanish-born Soviet agent acting on Stalin’s orders, Trotsky’s body is shown draped in a bloodstained shroud.
While the image alludes to the violence of the assassination - eyewitnesses attested to Trotsky grappling with his attacker and even spitting in his face - the depiction of his desk also evokes the legacy of work that a great man leaves behind.
When Bacon produced this signed limited edition, he was just five years away from his own death, lending the work a particularly contemplative resonance.
The panels are numbered as follows:
Left Panel (Woodrow Wilson): 15/99; Central Panel (John Edwards): 80/99; Right Panel (Trotskys Desk): 58/99
