"If you are submerged in normal life, then your view will be normal. So we have to keep separate from normal life in order to be able to say something that is not known. People come to art for something that they don't understand, that's not in their life already."

Gilbert Prousch and George Passmore are known for their distinctive and highly formal appearance and manner in performance art, and also for their brightly coloured graphic-style photo-based artworks. Gilbert and George's approach to art has always been anti-elitist. Adopting the slogan "Art for All", they aimed to be relevant beyond the narrow confines of the art world. Although they work in a variety of media, they have always referred to all of their works as "sculpture". They have described their work as "a global language to do with humanism — pain and suffering.” 

 

Their work explores themes of mortality, sexuality, and social issues. They often incorporate elements of self-portraiture and self-deprecating humour. They are perhaps best known for their photographic images, overlaid with black grids. Works in this signature style are characterized by large-scale graphic imagery, striking colour palettes, and a deliberate anti-aesthetic approach.

 

Gilbert & George have been honoured with numerous solo exhibitions across the world. They won the Turner Prize in 1986, and represented the UK at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005.
