Chitra Merchant

Overview

Chitra Merchant's Terra screen prints derive from ancient Indian historical sites, evolving into unique imaginal structures through her love of drawing, either created on-site or directly on a screen as stencils. These drawings are then transformed into screen prints, leveraging its versatility for colour, tone, line, and text layering, often enhanced with hand-drawn details. These pieces reflect profound emotional connections to colour, transporting viewers to exotic realms, a likely reason for their huge success at Royal Academy exhibitions. Chitra's art is also influenced by the Western Ghats' forest ecologies, where she grew up and often visits, drawing inspiration from sacred groves (Devakads), their myths, and the urgent need to address environmental threats to these areas. Her artworks celebrate biodiversity, particularly rooted in observational drawings of ancient species vital to the region's medicinal, spiritual, and symbolic significance.
