In 2011 Perry curated "Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman" at the British Museum, a show that sought to shine a light on the countless artisan makers whose names have been lost to history. Although known primarily for his ceramics and tapestries, Perry has embraced a wide variety of media in his practice, including methods that would traditionally be classed as 'craft' as opposed to 'art'. In bringing these techniques back to the artistic sphere, he encourages us to recognise the aesthetic importance the resulting objects have in our daily lives and how they shape our engagement with society.
"House of Love Shrine" was produced to accompany "The Most Popular Art Exhibition Ever!", held at the Serpentine Gallery from 8th June - 10th September 2017. Its implicit references to traditional folk carvings, reimagined in the gleaming modernity of steel, places it firmly within the aesthetic of Perry's reverence for our visual history.
